I’ve had a lot of people asking about Acellus for homeschool and we have really enjoyed it this year, so I wanted to share a few reasons we love it!
We started using this for our middle school daughter’s core subjects. She has ADHD and is also on a very different level in math than in language arts. We did not plan to use it for our kindergartener, but started using it for some consistency in science and history, and actually now he uses it to supplement in all his subjects.
Here are a few things we love about it:
1. The instructors are really engaging!
Each lesson is a short video from an instructor followed by a little quiz to gauge their comprehension. Video lessons have come a longgg way from the recorded video lessons I had from Abeka back in the day. Both kids especially love the math teacher and this is huge for us. The first option we have found that doesn’t lead to frustration in math for our daughter!! And our son is able to work ahead and do a grade ahead to keep him challenged in addition to his main curriculum. I would encourage you to not rely completely on something like Acellus for homeschool for the really early years because I do think there will be some gaps there. We supplement with several other things, just like with any program or curriculum you choose.
2. It’s not gamified or overstimulating.
The online learning options have a tendency to act like a video game or have a ton of distracting prizes and I am just not a fan of that. I want them to enjoy learning and not be obsessed with a prize. There are a few incentives with staying on track for goals, but nothing crazy like some other things I’ve seen.
3. The vectored instruction is amazing.
I had never heard of this, but it has technology built in so if your student is struggling in one area, it will send them other instructional videos that are going back and filling in the gaps. This is one of my favorite features!
4. It is completely independent.
As a mom of three who also works, this is so crucial for us. Both kids can just jump on and start their studies and accomplish their goals without any help from me. I can check their grades and their progress which I love, but I don’t have to do any grading or re-teaching.
5. You set the pace.
I love that I can set their learning goals. If they are behind in one subject and you want them to finish two grade levels in a year, you just set their goals to complete that. Or if you find they are taking too long and getting frustrated, you can set small goals.
6. You can also add in elective classes!
My daughter has really enjoyed taking additional science and engineering classes on top of her core subjects.
My only negative thought with the program is that I do wish they would add a few more electives at the lower levels, and it is a secular program so if you are looking for a faith-based curriculum just know you will have to have some conversations about certain science topics and have to supplement with your own Bible curriculum. We use Lifepac for that! Like I mentioned, I know Acellus for homeschool isn’t for everyone but I did want to share our thoughts because it has been a wonderful fit for us this year!
Happy homeschooling,
Katelyn
